3D Force Plates

We use 3D Force Plates to analyse the biomechanics of a student’s golf swing. This technology works by measuring the ground reaction forces, torques and the centre of pressure during their golf swing.
In order to create motion, a golfer needs to exert pressure through the ground. How this pressure is distributed throughout the golf swing can have a huge impact on your game. Each player has their own physique and with it their own body mechanics. 3D Force Plates allow us to analyse their swing and optimise the timing and magnitude of pressure throughout their swing. By making small adjustments, we can make huge gains in the efficiency of movement, power and club delivery.
Golf Swing Analysis
3D Force Plates accurately measure the three-dimensional forces that are being applied to the ground by the golfer. They also accurately measure the timing patterns and the magnitude. These are then then displayed in a graphical interface for the coach to analyse. Our coaches are well trained to interpret this data and evaluate where adjustments must be made in the student’s swing. We can then build the relevant drills into their training programme to help them improve more quickly.

Pressure Distribution and Stance Width
One of the signs that we look for when using 3D Force Plates is pressure distribution and stance width. This tells us which part of each foot is putting pressure on the ground at each instant during the swing.
If there is too much pressure on the heels or toes, then they are leaning backwards or forwards too much. It also tells us if a player is putting too much pressure on the inside or outside of their feet. If the pressure here is not correct it will impede the players ability to produce the correct ground reaction forces.
It also tells us what the percentage of pressure is between the left and the right foot throughout the swing. This allows us to see how much pressure each leg is contributing to the golf swing. With this data we can tailor each player’s swing to get the optimum performance for their body mechanics.
Center of Pressure and Swing Pattern
The 3D Force Plates also measure the centre of pressure throughout the swing. This then gives us a very useful swing pattern which the coach can use to further analyse the swing. It can highlight if the player is dynamically aiming their pressures and influencing the direction of the club.
By studying these subtle movements or inconsistencies whilst playing back the video of the swing, the coach can pinpoint problems. This system provides extremely accurate information and is enormously valuable for the coach when forming a training programme.
